  • F10 – Barrier Ointment

    , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Apart from using as a wound treatment to prevent re-infection, F10 Germicidal Barrier Ointment is also highly effective when used for the following indication:
 Localized ringworminfections (usually caused by fungi of theTrichophytonandMicrosporumgenera in dogs, cats, horses and cattle). The correct term is “Dermatophytosis”
Ringwormis a very aggressive fungus (usuallyMicrosporum canis) for which there is no “one step” solution. This skin disorder is characterized by a circular area of hair loss with a red, raised outer rim. The face, ears, feet and tail are the most common affected areas. Young and/or immunocompromised animals, long-haired cats and Yorkshire Terriers are especially prone to these infections. It is endemic in many Persian catteries and adult cats can be chronic carriers of the fungal spores even without showing any signs of infection. Animals come into contact with infective fungal spores in the indoor or outdoor environment. Contaminated soil as well as other infected animals are common sources of infection. Treatment of the environment is as important as treatment of affected animals. Dermatophytosis is contagious to other animals and to humans.
     Localizedmalasseziayeast infections on skin
Malasseziais a common yeast organism found on normal and abnormal dog skin and ears and can cause severe dermatitis (inflammation of the skin) or otitis (inflammation of the ear). Some factors that can lead to this disorder include moisture (excessive skin folds, floppy ears, narrow ear canals), excessive waxy build-up, allergic and bacterial skin disease. The condition is extremely itchy and often starts during summer when there is an increase in humidity. Not contagious, except to immunocompromised animals and humans.
 Pyotraumatic dermatitis e.g. hotspots and moist eczema
Hot spots and moist eczema are acute bacterial skin infections secondary to self-inflicted trauma e.g. licking, scratching, rubbing. It is a seasonal problem–hot and humid conditions. Lesions are acutely itchy and painful and secondary bacterial infection occurs as result of some underlying problem. Not contagious.
     Pododermatitis
Pododermatitisrefers to the inflammation of the skin on the feet of mainly dogs and is also known as “foot-licking”. Bacteria and fungi are often the causes, but the condition can also be a result of allergies, immune diseases, hormonal diseases and cancer. Clinical signs vary but always include the toes, nails, footpads or the entire paw. The feet may be grossly swollen, with or without fluid accumulation. Nodules and ulcers may be present oozing blood or pus. Pain and itching will result in constant licking and lameness. The cause is not always easy to determine and treatment and management often difficult and frustrating. Not contagious.
 Skin fold dermatitis (including lip fold, tail fold, vulvar fold)
These bacterial skin infections occur in the skin folds of dogs with excessive facial and lip folds (e.g. Eng Bulldogs) and body folds (e.g. Shar Peis, Basset Hounds). Mixed bacteria are usually present. Not contagious.
 Superficial pyodermas (generalized bacterial skin infections)
These superficial bacterial infections involve hair follicles and surrounding skin and are caused by Staphylococcus. Sometimes itchy. Often associated with underlying conditions such as hypersensitivity (e.g. flea bite) or parasitic skin conditions e.g. Demodex and Sarcoptes (sometimes referred to as “mange” or “demodectic mange” or commonly “bacterial mange”)
 “Bumble foot”in avians (staphylococci bacterial infection) Bumble footis a common term to describe a sometimes complex inflammatory disease involving the scales, skin and deeper tissues of avian feet. Although there is usually a bacterial component to the disease development, the initiating cause is often bruising, injury or trauma. The area will be red, swollen an infected and treatment consists of a combination of topical antimicrobial treatment, proper hygiene and correct perches and cages.
 “Pizzle disease”in sheep (bacterial infection of the penis) Also known as “sheath rot”, it is an infection of the sheath area of the ram, caused by a Corynebacterium. Ulceration of the skin around the preputial opening will block the opening to the prepuce and result in severe pain. This condition affects the ram’s desire and ability to breed.
 “Foot rot”in cattle/sheep Also known as “interdigital necrobacillosis”, it is an inflammation of the sensitive tissues of the foot, resulting in severe lameness. The condition is caused by an interaction by 2 bacteria, Bacteriodes, which lives in animal’s hooves, and Fusobacterium, a normal inhabitant of soil and manure. The infection is highly contagious with a high incidence in wet, humid weather. The source of infection is the discharges from other animal’s feet and the bacteria enter through abrasions on the lower part of the feet. The infection causes a fever and can lead to severe loss of production, especially in dairy cattle.
 “Thrush”in horses Also known as “stinky feet”, this is a hygiene related condition caused by anaerobic bacteria that attack the frog and surrounding tissue. Clinical symptoms include a dark, pus-like discharge with a foul odour. Poor sanitation, dirty stables, manure-filled paddocks and wet conditions increase the risk of a horse developing thrush.
 cracked udders and teatsin cattle (not the same as mastitis –an inflammation of the mammary gland)
 “greasy heel” also known as “mud fever”in horses This is abacterial infection of the skin of the lower limbs of horses with a crusty scab appearance and often difficult to treat as result of prolonged exposure to wet or muddy conditions.
     pseudo-cowpox lesions on udders
     trauma woundse.g. bite wounds
